The story opens with Walter, the protagonist, as a prisoner of war on a British destroyer. He reminisces about his father’s difficulties which resulted from his Christian stance in his community.

Chapter Two - Saved

Recounting his apprenticeship as a blacksmith and his training in the German Navy.

Chapter Three - Saved

Further training on the submarine. A mishap during maneuvers. Relationships on board the submarine.

Chapter Four - Saved

A close call during training when the submarine dives too steeply. The final maneuvers before the mission. The first fatality aboard the submarine.

Chapter Five - Saved

The submarine is outfitted with a snorkel and new skills are learned. First mission in the Atlantic. Attacked by an airplane. Depth charged by a destroyer. Not the end yet.

Chapter Six - Saved

The submarine is sunk. Walter escapes through a torpedo hatch, is picked up by a British destroyer. The destroyer continues on its mission.

Chapter Seven - Saved

Walter is taken ashore and transferred to an American camp where he is interrogated. He is then sent back to the British.

Chapter Eight - Saved

Interrogated by the British and then moved to a camp near Edinburgh where he unsuccessfully attempts to join a planned escape attempt. Shipped to the U.S.A.

Chapter Nine - Saved

Life in a prisoner of war camp in Georgia. Working at various jobs. Conditions at the end of the war.

Chapter Ten - Saved

Repatriation delayed. Another year and a half in Britain. Repatriation and post-war conditions in Germany. Emigration to Canada. Commitment to Christ.  Gratitude For God’s grace.
