How High Can Birds Fly?

I was sitting in my chair the other morning gazing out of our third floor apartment window, as a flock of seagulls sped by.

In my mind they triggered the question, /just how high can birds fly?

Was the size of a bird a factor in the equation? eg a sparrow versus an eagle. I decided to probe Google in search of an appropriate answer. Size does seem to be important as well as a bird's wing span.

Back in November 29, 1975, a Griffon Gyps Ruepelli Vulture with a wing span of ten feet was sucked into an aircraft's jet engine 37,900 feet above the Ivory Coast in West Africa.

Most birds  fly below 500 feet.
