Victoria Falls, the Congo River and Zambezi River

Mac, I love your website!

So far, I have only seen your page of rivers, which is what brought me to your site, but  I can see on your main page that you have a lot to keep me busy yet.

You mention the Victoria Falls as being brought to mind when one thinks of the Congo River; however, Victoria Falls are on the Zambezi River, not the Congo.  The headwaters to the two rivers are very near each other (http://www.az.com.na/index.php?page=news/news.php&identifier=1101995235&id=12605) but the Congo - as you state - flows to the Atlantic Ocean, while the Zambezi flows into the Indian Ocean on the other side of the continent.

Here is a great satellite photo of the falls from http://www.intute.ac.uk/sciences/worldguide/html/image_1948.html  The top of the photo is the upper river, making a wide delta before cascading into a narrow gulch and flowing out in a narrow river.  There is a resort  (with a row of cottages along the river) on the right side of the delta at the very edge of the river and cliff.  A village is on the left of the photo below the falls.

Keep up the good work!

Judith,

How nice to hear from you.

Here is what I wrote about the Congo,

"On hearing the name Congo River, it summons up in my mind, Africa, Stanley and Livingstone, the mighty Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, the Dark Continent, and its history of Black Slavery." ( I was not putting Victoria Falls on the Congo, just in my mind's eye thinking Africa and some of its history )

I know that the Victoria Falls are on the Zambesi, it was there whilst on a sunset cruise on that river I met my wife Denise, she was with a girl friend on an African safari, and I was on my own. That was in 1994, we got together, and then in 1999 married, so its now 12 years since we met on the Zambesi, a very precious river for me. One of the best things I have ever done was to take off in Zambia in the back seat of an open Microlite, and over the Victoria Falls at less than a 1000 feet, amazing!!

AHOY is an amalgam, I research and write all the content, my friend and web master Terry Kearns in Atlanta Georgia, looks after the site , its design, and makes my part of it all look good, so that we face the world and anyone who by chance logs on.

I trust you may find some other areas of interest.

Best regards from Australia.
Mac.
