Value of Graff Spee artifacts? Mr Mackenzie J Gregory , my name is Gustavo Gonzalez, I am from Montevideo – Uruguay. I have a real little piece of Battleship Graff Spee. It was recovered by fisherman, maybe 40 or 50 years ago. Now their grandchildren give me the piece to sell it. This boy know that his grandfather along with other fisherman recovered other pieces of the ship in successive immersions or using fishing-tackles. I have no idea what class of piece is, but I need to know what do you think about the estimate value in US Dollars for a collector ? or it have history value only ? (symbolic value). Measures: 23 cm wide, 23 cm high . 1 milimeter width. Thank you in advance and sorry for my basic English. --
My thanks for your interesting message. I am not sure how you can authenticate that your piece of metal actually came from Graf Spee, now I believe from your account that it did, but it may not be easy to convince a potential buyer. I am not really qualified to give you an estimate of its value, and wonder just where in the ship such a piece of metal with a swastika thereon might have come from. You could put a photo and a description of this piece and how it came into the fisherman's family hands, up on Ebay, and put a reserve price on it in US Dollars that the family would accept, hard to say what the outcome might be. Do you have an auction house in Montevideo that might appraise the piece, and may offer to sell it for you? One that handles antiques and older collector items.
