Two Navy X Craft scuttled after the War lying in Aberlady Bay, East Lothian

Dear Mac and Terry,

On a recent visit to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary I met up with an old  Peterhead fisherman pal whd been in the Navy at the same time as mysef and he was also interested in Midget Submarines.  He told me that he had heard about two Navy X Craft which had been scuttled after the War and used for Target practice by the R.A.F.  They were lying in Aberlady Bay,East Lothian.

When I arrived home I checked on the Internet.  I found  at http://www.morrice.info/walk/aberlady.html   I asked Alex Morrice ( formerly of Aberdeen) for permission to use his photograph of the X craft.  He said that no permission was required and he was most helpful.  Apparently the  two X Craft are quite an attraction.  Alex has put up a drawing on his website of the track from Aberlady Bay carpark to the craft.  It appears that the craft are remarkably well preserved.  According to Alex you must get to beach at the lowest ebb of the tide.  It is even possible to clamber on to the Craft and to take photographs.  Alex warned that one must be careful and prudent as the tide at Aberlady bay is very fast.

Cynthia and I are already making plans to visit sometime in the new year.  The X Craft is certainly not a Welfreighter but I hope that something like this will eventually turn up re. the Welfreighter.

I hope that this will be of interest to you.  Hope that you are both well.  Cynthia and I are going down to London for a few days and will visit the National Archives at Kew and the Maritime Museum at Greenwich.    Perhaps I may have something fresh for you on the Welfreighter when I return.

P.S.   I have just finished reading `MAGENNIS V.C.` by George Fleming.   It is a wonderful read but tremendously sad.   I hope to say more about this brilliant man and book later.   All the best to you both.

Bob.
