The HMAS Sydney Thimble "Dedal"

Estimado Sr. Mackenzie:

Le mando varias fotos del famoso dedal. Creí que las había recibido con mi primer mensaje. Le agradezco su interés. Por favor, si tiene algún problema, no dude en decirmerlo. Perdón, por la tardanza, pero me encontraba de vacaciones.

Regards,
Augusto.

You will recall the piece from Spain when the guy talked about a dedal, and I thought it should be medal. wrong again, dedal in Spanish is a thimble, I asked him to send a photo of the medal, he has, and its a silver thimble with HMAS Sydney and an anchor on it. I will send you the photos, all very interesting.

One of my Shropshire executive is Eric Moran, now about 88, he was in the ship in Cadiz back in 1935, the time Augusto's grandfather received his thimble from someone in the ship, I will ask Eric if he can throw any light on the subject.

Amazing how our site attracts these different facets of things that happened many years ago.

At the time HMAS Sydney was in Cadiz Spain, in December 1935, and the Dedal from Sydney was exchanged, this German Battleship Schleiser was also there.

My Vice President of HMAS Canberra/Shropshire Association, Eric Moran at that time was in Sydney, as a telegraphist, he went on to serve in Shropshire with me as our Chief Telagraphist.

He found this photograph and made me a copy, he ran a photographic business on board Sydney. Unfortunately he has no knowledge about the Dedal, so that story remains unravelled.
