Sydney/Emden Medal

June 25, 2009  Subject: Sydney - Emden medallion

Hi Mac,

May I firstly say how much I enjoy reading all the great things on your website, a great way to pass the time.

I have what I hope to be an original medallion commemorating the HMAS SYDNEY - SMS EMDEN, not sure if you have seen many of these but I am just asking around to see if it is a real one or not? I am only a little concerned with what appears to be a small spot of silver left over from when the crown part was fixed to the coin as can be seen near the W. KERR marking to the rear. I would have thought the maker would have polished this
off but who knows?

Anyway I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

By the way I am an ex kellick stoker submariner, 1984 - 1993  good times!!

Cheers,
Paul

Paul,

Nice to hear from you and thank you for your comments about AHOY.

Your Sydney/Emden Medal looks genuine enough, and I takeit that it was not one presenteed to a crew member, as there does not appear to be a nameengraved thereon, such as the one given to J T Bird.

Producing a 1,000 of them, perhaps the Sydney Jeweller Kerr just became tired, and did not bother to clean up your copy.

Regards,
Mac.
