The photo that you show of the hole in the SS Ceramic IS in fact the damage that she took in the collision with the SS Testbank. (see "SS Ceramic, a victim of U-515"

I have a copy of the same picture, as my mother and I were on the Ceramic at the time of collision. 

She told me that we spent several months in Cape-town before starting  for Australia.
