Roger Coward, author of Sailors in Cages

Hi Mac

Hope you don't mind me making contact, but I was surfing the net to see if there was any more info on Roger (Coward, author of Sailors in Cages).

I worked in Bath in 1980 to 1983 in a hotel whose car park was opposite Rogers estate agency on Princes Street. I got to know him when he used to drink in the Griffin Arms pub at the bottom of Princes Street - not for him the pompous hotel bar but rather the spit and sawdust of the Griffin. It was a privilege to have known this dear sweet, generous and genteel man.

When I returned to work again in Bath in 1986, I made a point of seeking him out when he was, as usual, having a pint of bitter in the Griffin. We had a catch up and a few beers. Sadly, I wasn't to know that this was the last time I would speak to him, as I heard the very sad news that he had died. He once gave me his copy of 'Sailors in Cages' to read and last year I tracked a copy down through the amazon website and took it on my honeymoon to read again. There is a connection as to why I bought the book last year, but I will not overstay my welcome in this email. If it is of interest to you, please email back.

Regards
David Tooby

David,

Thank you for your letter, it is always good to have some extra information on someone we have written about on AHOY, and we have had a great deal of interest about Roger, his book and Voltaire in general.

I have my own copy of Roger's book, and welcome any futher note from you.

Best regards,
Mac.
