Letters

My uncle, John James Minnie

April 20, 2013

Hi Mac:

I have enjoyed your website and reading about your naval career!

I had an enquiry about the personal effects of my uncle, John James Minnie, who died in August 1942 while serving in the RAN. I was named John after him and now have his personal effects here at home in Houston, Texas. There are
some interesting pictures with his personal effects which appear to show a landing at Noumea (Army troops leaving the ship, RAN band marching down the street, sailors in front of French Post Office, etc.).

I was wondering if they could be of any interest to a museum or the AWM. John Minnie served in HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Gerrard. I have a picture of him with my mum and dad at HMAS Cerberus also. I also have his. medals, hat band, identity tags (one made from a New Guinea coin?), and some games played by the sailors.

Best wishes,
John Irwin

John,

Thank you for your mail, and your kind words about AHOY.

The landing at Noumea would have been from HMAS Adelaide, I served in her after the sinking of Canberra.

If you send me some of your Uncle's photos I will add them to AHOY.

Go to this URL for your Uncle's RAN Certificate of Service.

Best wishes,
