Maxim Magazine on I-52, Golden Submarine

(see the I-52, Japan's Golden Submarine article)

Ahoy!

Maxim magazine is featuring an article about famous lost treasures, and I found your website on the I-52 to be informative.  If possible, could I ask a couple questions by email?

From what I gather, no one has yet been able to retrieve the gold -- is that right?

Is the main problem the intense pressure down there makes extended search of the ship impossible?  I assume divers could never survive, and that you'd need some sort of mini-sub.

I am emailing Nauticos to see if they have plans to go back and try to raise the thing.  Have you heard of other teams trying to do that?

One more thing: How do you wish to be identified in the article?

Thanks

PS: (If it increases my credibility with you, know that my dad is a retired ship captain with the USCG.  Semper P!)

Hello Paul,

Thank You for your E-Mail.

I am continually suprised what different people find of interest on my Ahoy site.

To try and answer your questions.

No I am not aware of anyone yet being able to retrieve the gold from I-52, but the lure of about $25 Million worth lying there 17,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean must be a great incentive for some adventurer with a large backing.

The problem as you suggest is the immense pressure at that depth, it is a mile further down than the wreck of Titanic lay. At that depth a submersible is needed to cope with the pressure.

I also have no knowledge of any other team trying to prise the two tons of gold from the wreck of I-52.

You ask how I would like to be identified in your article, Naval Historian, would be nice.

I would be grateful to see a copy of your article in Maxim when it is finished.

Best regards,

Mackenzie Gregory.

You're right.  Being on the web gives you the ability to reach an amazing number of people really easily.  I've been researching treasure sites all over the world, and I can contact experts on every one without breaking a sweat.

I'll send the piece your way.  Thanks a lot!

Paul Bibeau
