Matthew Herbison Marshall served and died on HMS Mourne: a memorial website

see "List of 455 Officers and sailors who were missing or killed when their three ships (Veteran, Boadicea, and Mourne) were sunk by German forces in WW2."

Dear Mac

As you have several letters from relatives of those lost on HMS Mourne on your website I thought you might be interested in the following.

During a recent reunion with family members from Ballymena, N. Ireland I was shown a photograph of HMS Mourne on which my uncle Herbie Marshall served and died. Seizing the opportunity I removed the photo from the frame and took some pictures with my digital camera. Luckily these came out rather well and I have been able to use them in putting together a memorial webpage for my uncle. I believe these are the only pictures of HMS Mourne on the internet so it should be of particular interest to descendants of those lost.

Hopefully the information will be added to as more comes to light. If you wish to use this photograph of the Mourne on your website you are more than welcome to do so. If you still have any contact details for the relatives perhaps they would also be interested.

Regards
Chris Marshall

Hello Chris,

Thank you for that, it is great to finally have a photo of HMS Mourne to put up on AHOY.

My NZ correspondent some time ago told me he had a photo, but despite my request for a copy, that did not eventuate.

Sad to think that your Uncle Herbie was cut off at only 19.

To any relatives that I still have an address for, I will pass on your this picture.

I am very grateful for all your trouble and time you have devoted to this Memorial, and then to share it with us.

Best wishes for Christmas and 2007 and beyond.

Mac.
