John Melbourne Bennett joined the Merchant Navy in 1915

Hi Mac,

Just came across you site quite by accident looking at identifying Merchant Seaman cap badges. My grandfather John Melbourne Bennett was born in Melbourne in 1888 and returned to the U.K. we believe when he was six months old. He joined the Merchant Navy in 1915 and was there until retirement. He was Chief Officer (I've just verified that from your site). He was on several ships and worked for several different lines (Elder Dempster) (Bristol City Line) and many others. The ships included Cape Race, Yewdale, Auchmacoy, Berga and Arete. Do any of these mean anything to you and where do you think it best to start researching them.  I am visiting a Maritime Museum in Liverpool shortly hopefully that will be of some help.

Yours sincerely,
Wendy
