HMAS Basilisk, a shore Naval Base in Port Moresby

Hi Mac

I wondering if you have any info on HMAS Basilisk a shore Naval Base in Port Moresby. When operated how long and by whom? Any photos also would be great.

I am writing a book on Papua and the men living in Papua when WW2 started. Some of these men joined the militia and then transferred to the RAN

Regards
Helene

Helene,

Of course Port Moresby was named by Captain John Moresby ( 1830-1922 ) plus Fairfax Harbour at PM after his father Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby

( 1786-1877 ) John Moresby's command HMS Basilisk was the basis of naming the RAN base at Port Moresby HMAS Basilisk.

It commissioned on January 1st 1943 under the command of Commander R.B.A. Hunt RAN, who was previously Naval Officer in Charge Port Moresby.

Details of John Moresby form Wikipedia.
