Graf Spee bell turns up in UK

Hi,

I found your website when I was looking for information about a bell I have in my possession.

I notice you already have at least two others that have made contact with you but I have enclosed some pictures of the one I have. You can see the detail on the lettering and the carving on the opposite side. I assume these were made as souvenirs sometime after the sinking of the ship.

I'd be grateful for any further information you may have.

Kind regards
Keith Hicks

Keith,

Your Graf Spee bell seems exactly the same as the two or three other bells around the world that I have been told about. See  "Ships bell from the Graf Spee or possibly from one of their life boats?" and "Second Graf Spee Bell?"

How did you come by your bell?

As more come to light I am convinced that they were produced in Germany to commemmorate the ship, and with the date of 1939, most likely her loss at the Battle of the River Plate.

They are nicely cast and are a great reminder of a once proud ship.

Thank you for getting in touch with me, it is much appreciated.

Best regards,
Mackenzie Gregory.
