Graf Spee Bell

February 16, 2010

Dear Mac,

I have a similar bell. Imperial War Museum tells me that they have heard of these artefacts, and they were probably cast in Uruguay from metal (bronze) from the wreck of Graf Spee. Hence the date which was the date of salvage.

I found mine buried in my garden!

Any further information would be gratefully received.

Regards,
Ken Harding

Ken,

Thank you for that, I have had information from about 6 people who have a similar bell, no doubt cast as a souvenir of the great Graf Spee, and as the Imperial War Musdeum comment, the year 1939 was the date the German ship as  scutlled at Montevideo.

I always thought these bells werer most likely cast in Gemany, but the IWM may well have it right, suggesting
they emanated from Uruguay made from metal from the wreck of the great ship itself.

Regards,
Mac.
