George F. Elliot and the Coast Guard's role at Guadalcanal

mac,

love your web site.. on a search using "george f.elliot" you popped up!!

anyhow, my dad (who is still alive and kicking) has been asking about his old shop.. he won the silver star(recommended for a navy cross) for trying to put fires out aboard ship after the mitsubishi hit her..

he was first class, US Coast Guard.. he ran the higgens boats back and forth. he was on a higgens boat on the way to the beach when the "elliot" was hit .. he turned his boat (he was the coxswain) around and went back to the ship to help on fire control...after it was sunk, he was transferred to another ship...

do you know of any books that would talk about this or might mention the coast guard and their roll at guadalcanal??

thanks,

fred mann, mcallen, texas (near brownsville and just north of the rio grande..i am a ham radio operator and talk to a lot of aussie and nz stations ..

Frederick,

Nice to hear from you, and thank you for your kind remarks about AHOY. It is a joint effort with my friend and Web Master, Terry Kearns in Atlanta, Georgia. He copes with all my research and scribblings to produce what faces the world on our site, and anyone who happens to click on AHOY.

I will send separately a reference to a book about the role of the Coast Guard at Guadalcanal.

"The Coast Guard and the Pacific War" by Robert M. Browning Jr.

They indeed did a great job there, the whole campaign vital to our Pacific strategy, and the beginning of the push towards Tokyo, and final victory.

Best wishes,
Mac. Gregory.
