Fred Shepherd, whom died amongst the disaster of the Lancastria

Hello there,

you have on your site a Fred Shepherd, whom died amongst the disaster of the Lancastria. I believe this to be my grandad. My Father has now passed away Freds son, John Shepherd. My name is Diane Shepherd. I am trying to find out if he has a burial place as my father only knew he was lost at sea, can you inform me of where and how to search for further information to add to my family records . Grateful for any help you may be able to give. Freds wife was named Elizebeth. They lived in Whiston, MERSEYSIDE they had 5 children, my dad being 1, there was Audrey, Betty, John, William, and Fred. Do you have any photos?

Diane,

Here are Fred's Casualty details, and his Certificate from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site.

The fact that no mention of his grave site is made probably indicates he has the sea for his grave.

You will note that his name appears on the Tower Hill Memorial in London on panel  63.

It is a Memorial to Merchant Navy sailors who died at sea, and the panels cannot be accesssed from the internet, you would need to actually visit Tower Hill to view his name on that panel.

I am sorry but I do not have any photographs. But see this URL: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/768384.stm for a report on the sinking, and there is a Lancastrian Association ( I suggest you enter that into Google ) which visits France each year to remember this tragedy.

Best regards,

Mackenzie.
