Forthcominig article about rescue ship Stockport

Mac,

I read with interest your webpage on convoy rescue ships. I'm writing a piece for the British magazine, 'Britain at War,' about the rescue ship Stockport. I'm sourcing photos to illustrate it and I see you have two on your page, of a sick bay and operating theatre, that would be ideal. Could you let me know who to approach to get copies and permission for use please.

Your website makes fascinating reading. I was looking at the pages on the Athenia sinking at the beginning of the war. I used to be manager of Portpatrick coast radio station in Scotland. While I was there I discovered three wartime distress logs which included the initial distress of the Athenia. I think I have a photocopy of it somewhere. If I can find it, I'll scan it and send it to you.

Best wishes

Brian,

Thank you for your kind words about AHOY.

At this distance I am not sure where I turned up those photos on the Rescue Ships.

Here is a reference to a book about them: Hague, Arnold. Convoy Rescue Ships: 1940-1945. Gravesend, Great Britain: World Ship Society.

If all else fails and you have a deadline take what you want from my AHOY site and just credit it.

Where are you in Dorset? Whilst appointed to HMS Osprey to undertake a Long Anti Submarine Course over 1946-1947, we had a house in ICEN Road Radipole, a Weymouth suburb. On an old Ariel motorbike we explored the county and loved our time there.

I would be pleased to have the Athenia signal please if you can turn it up.

Best regards.
Mac.

Mac,

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I've got Arnold Hague's book, so I'll have a look in there this evening. I don't know why I didn't think if it before!!

I'll certainly send you a copy of the Athenia log, if I can find it; also a copy of the article, if it is eventually published.

I'm living just outside Poole so I'm not too far away from Weymouth. Writing is really a sideline as I have a full time job with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution here in Poole. Having said that, sit on a national committee looking into marine radio requirements for the 2012 Olympics (the sailing is going to take place at Weymouth) so I might see more of the town in the next few years.

I'll be in touch and thanks once again.

Regards
Brian
