Father was a seaman on the Ramses in WW2

See "Blockade Runner" to learn more about Ramses

Hi, My name is Paul Gilbert and my father was a seaman on the Ramses in WW2. Your account of the sinking is pretty much exactly how Dad told us it happened however he never told us much about the ship or what it was doing or even when it was sunk so hearing about on your web page was really interesting.  Dad died in 1977 when I was 16 so we never really got much information about his war years other than he was in the merchant navy and was a POW in australia. I would like to hear from you if you have any futher information about this ship.

Regards
Paul Gilbert

Hello Paul,

Nice to hear from you.

I am afraid there is very little to add about Ramses, than what is already up on AHOY.

She was stranded for years in the east until the ship was trying to evade any Allied warship and slip back into Germany with her important cargo. In the Adelaide, by chance we came across her, and as one of our Officers had served prewar in the Merchant Marine, he immediately recognised the ship as Ramses, and not what she pretended to be. So her game was up, and her end near.

The rest of course is history, and your Dad would have been picked up by my ship, and so finished the war in a POW camp at Tatura in the state of Victoria.

I am sorry to learn he died so long ago, and that you were robbed of his company.

Kindest regards,

Mac. Gregory.

Hi thanks for your reponse, the information your web site has supplied has helped me track some of the other ships Dad was on, one called the Ermland which was later changed to the "Wesserland". This apparently was the first successful blockade runner. The only document I have is a certificate issued in 1948 showing the 3 or 4 ships he was on from 1937 to Oct 1944 and what rating he was on the ships.

Anyway thanks again and congratulations on your web site it is excellent.

Regards

Paul Gilbert.
