Merchant Seamen killed from the Empire Light when the Pinguin was sunk by HMS Cornwall on the 8th May 1941

I found your website very interesting and helpful. My uncle was on the Empire Light, which was sunk by the Pinguin. I would be interested to find out more about the Empire Light, eg the names of those who died/survived/details on the vessel/previous voyages/photograph etc. Do you have any suggestions on how I could take this forward?

Many thanks
Donnie Macleod

Hello Donnie,

Thank you for your kind words about Ahoy, I am trying to find a source to help with your request for information about Empire Light, and will be in tough again .

Regards,
Mac. Gregory.

Hello Donnie,

Here is a response from Billy McGee, a contact I have in UK for all things Merchant Navy in WW2.

The British Cruiser HMS Cornwall found and sank the Empire Light, and in that battle obviously a number of her crew captured by Empire Light were killed, and they are all listed.

Billy suggests how you may find the crew list.

Good luck with your search, and I hope this information is of some help to you.

Best Regards,

Mac. Gregory.

Hello Billy,

The Empire Light Was sunk by the Armed German Raider Pinguin in the Indian Ocean during WW2, I have been asked by a Donnie Macleod from UK, whose Uncle was in her when she sunk, if I had any further details about the Ship. I had mentioned her in my Marauders of the Sea German Armed Raiders of WW2.

Could you point me where I may find crew lists, those who may have died in this action, a Photograpoh of the Ship etc. please? It would be great if you are able to help.

I trust all goes well with you,

Best regards,
Mac.

If he wants a full crew list he needs to go to the PRO in Kew to find if one still exists. These records are held under the ships official number. The official number can be found in the Lloyds register for 1941, the year she was built.

As for a photograph of this ship, I don't know of any. The ship was only built in 1941 and lost the same year so it is quite possible there are none at all.

This information is given free of charge, and I hope it is passed on likewise.

Rgds Billy

Many thanks. That is very helpful.

Regards Donnie
