Cook aboard HMS Auraniam; attacked by U-123 under the command of Reinhard Hardegen

December 24, 2009

Dear Mac

My name is Luis Rebelo and I currently live in Cape Town, South Africa.

I'm finnishing a book I have been writing for the last 3 years, (about world war two and includes U-boat action), and I have recently found out that my grandfather was attacked by U-123 under the command of Reinhard Hardegen, he was a cook aboard HMS Aurania. I would very much like to get into to conatct with Mr Hardegen and send him a picture of my grandfather and a copy of my book.

I am struggling to find contact details or somebody who can help me with this.

If you are able to help or point me in the right direction I would highly appreciate it.

Highest regards
Luis Rebelo

PS: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

Dear Luis,

Great city you live in, I have fond memories of visits in 1940 and 1946.

Some detail of Reinharrd you may already have:

Personal information from Uboat.net:

Reinhard Hardegen Korvettenkapitän (Crew 33)

As he was in command of U-123 back in 1942, he may well not still be with us.

I would start by contacting the editor of the U-Boat net, he lives in Iceland, his name and E-mail address:

Gudmundur Helgason,   gummi@uboat.net

Good luck,
Mac.
