Convict Ship Scarborough

Dear Mac

I’m contacting you from Practical Family History – a UK magazine to help people trace their ancestors.

This month we’re running an article on websites to help people trace their transportee ancestors.

I’d like to use your image of the Scarborough to illustrate the article.

We go to print in just under a fortnight, but if you could get back to me by Monday with your terms, conditions and prices that would be lovely.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Helen T

Hello Helen.

The images of the First Fleet on Ahoy came from the First Fleet Fellowhip page on the internet, it is ten years old, in E-Mailing the address on that page it came bouncing back to me. The FFF are an organisation in Melbourne, my home city, that like your organisation, are interested in helping ancestors tracing their convict relatives.

I contacted FFF by phone to ask their approval for you to use the Scarborough image, and was informed they do not hold the copyright.

The images were painted by an artist in NSW, and a company called Pocketwatch Productions, or some such name gave FFF approval to use the images.

My contact at FFF, could not give me an address for PP, nor was she sure it was the actual name. I have not been able to run them down, and said to her, I was going to tell you to use the image of Scarborough to illustrate your article, and suggest you attribute the image to First Fleet Fellowship, Melbourne Australia, and she agreed with that suggestion. Sorry Helen, that is the best I could come up with, but I have tried on your behalf.

If you post me a copy of the finished magazine to M. J. Gregory. 301/598 St Kilda Road Melbourne. Victoria. 3004. Australia. I will ensure it gets to the FFF people. Of course you are probably well aware that Scarborough was indeed unique as a Convict transport ship, being the only ship to make two round trips from England to Australia.

The attached URL: may be helpful for your references, just in case you are unaware of its existence.

Best wishes and regards,

Mac.

Dear Mac

Many thanks for all the effort you’ve put in to trying to help me.

Yes, I would be delighted to use the image and can certainly credit as you suggest.

I’ve made a note of your address and will mail you a couple of copies of the mag (one for you, one for them) when it comes back from the printers (early Nov).

Yes, I have learnt (yesterday!) that the Scarborough was special being the one to sail in both the first and second fleets.

I really appreciate the lengths you have gone to for me.

Best wishes

Helen T
