Canadians who served in Voltaire Don’t ask me why, don’t ask me how, but for some as yet unknown reason I Googled HMS Voltaire and found your web site – WOW! My father who passed away in 1996 at the age of 75 was a stoker in Voltaire when she was sunk in 41. I have a copy of the newspaper article which was published here in Saint John New Brunswick, Canada in July of 1941. I have read all of the letters attached and without exception each and everyone was from a British seaman or relative, my father must have been one of the few Canadians who served in Voltaire. My father never talked about the war with me, he did talk to his father after his return and just before he died he had a long talk with my son, who is a career soldier in the Canadian Armed Forces. My son won’t tell me much about what was said so I know some but very little of his experiences as a POW and is escape attempts. If you like I’ll have some one, I like you am not very computer literate, scan the newspaper article and forward it along. Please keep up the good work, and let me know if you want to hear more or if you would like to see the article. Thanks Dave Logan
We would love to have a scan of the newspaper report please, and will add it to our Voltaire Pages. I could not find your Father in the crew list that I have for Voltaire. It is a pity your son will not share your Father's experience as a POW with you. Do you know the book by one of Voltaire's crew. Roger Coward called Sailors in Cages published by Macdonald. London. 1967? Regards, |
