Bryn Mussared served in HMAS Canberra

Hi Mac

I came across a reference to my father Bryn Mussared in correspondence on your website and then moved to your website. As you know he was serving on HMAS Canberra in August 1942. Although wounded he returned to service and finished the war on HMAS Nizaam. He served in the Royal Australian Navy until 1974, retiring as a Rear Admiral. He saw active service during the Malayan Emergency and the Korean War and was awarded the CBE (Military) in 1973. He died in November 1995 but is survived by his widow Betty.

The naval tradition was continued with my brother Timothy joining through Creswell and retiring as a Captain about 10 years ago and my sister Maryann marrying a Midshipman who retired recently as a Commodore. No sign yet of a third generation in the RAN.

If any of your correspondents have photographs that include my father, I would be interested in hearing from them.

Good luck with the website.

Best wishes
Philip Mussared

Hello Philip,

How nice to hear from you, of course I knew your father well, firstly at the Naval College in 1936, when in my first year, he was one of the exhalted fourth year to graduate at the end of 1936.

Then in Canberra when I was a Sub Lieutenant, he was an Engineering Lieutenant, at Savo, I believe he was in the secondary Damage Control Centre and was amongst the wounded, but fortunately was a survivor. Then he would at one time have been in the Dockyard at Garden Island when my ship would be in for a refit. Max Reed, John Shearing and John Lorimer, all in my Jervis Year, became plumbers, and Max like your father went on to be a Rear Admiral.

I remember Bryn with affection, he was a well respected member of the RAN Officer Corps for many years.

Am not aware of any of my correspondents having photos of him unfortunately, but then, I never know where the next E-Mail may turn up from, or what it may contain., I am often suprised. We have nearly had 50,000 visitors.

Again my thanks for taking the time to write and rekindle old times, especially those in Canberra.

My best wishes to you and your family.

Mac.Gregory.

Hi Mac,

I wonder if you can help me please.

I'm tracing my family history.including some of my ancestors and relatives who headed from Wales to Australia. I have come across reference to Bryn Mussared on your site including some correspondence from his son Philip.

As you can see from my e-mail, I am a MORGAN and I originate from South Wales, UK.  Bryn's mother was a lady called Maria Jane MORGAN (who married Allan Wheatley MUSSARED). Maria would have been first cousins with my grandfather as Maria's
father Abraham MORGAN (who emigrated 1912) and my great-grandfather Thomas MORGAN were brothers.

I realise Bryn has passed on now but I understand that his descendents live on.  Do you
have a contact e-mail address for any of the family please. I thought you may have an e-mail
address for Philip from the correspondence I found on your site. Any help would be much
appreciated...it would be great to make contact, swap some family history details or photos and hear some of the heroics.

If you feel unable to let me have the information directly, please forward this note on - thereby allowing the family to choose to make contact or not. I can assure you that my interests are genuine and I hope you can see that from the detailed information I have provided above.

Any help, much appreciated.

Kind regards,
Jason Morgan
