Letters

Brian Dougherty was an 19 year old gunner on the ship, North Britain, and was lost when it went down

Dear Mac,

I've just read the letter from Cyril Hill about the Harperley and how he saw the North Britain sunk. My Uncle, Brian Dougherty was an 19 year old gunner on the ship and was lost when it went down. I often wondered if any one of the gunners survived and if anyone knew him. It seems as if the ship went down quickly and I hope their end was mercifully quick. I still have the telegrams that were sent to my Aunt, his sister saying that he was missing and then another one a year later saying that he was presumed dead as there was no news of him.

I'd be grateful if anyone can give me any more information on the events of that day and if anyone knew him.

Regards,
Hazel Jackson

Hello Hazel,

I do not think we have had any mail from anyone who was in the ship Great Britain at the time she was sunk, but if we post your query on AHOY, one never knows what may happen.

I am continually suprised with the mail we do get as a result of something being added, so let us hope that some one out there on the net comes up and says Hello.

Thank you for your interest.

Kind regards,
Mac.
