Bill Roe served in Australia and later the Bataan

My name is Steve Roe and wish to thank you for the web site you have produced.

My Father  was in the Navy from 1938  and completed 27 years, his fondest memories were of his time on the Australia and later the Bataan, on the Aussie he was a Layer Rate but by the time he was on Bataan he was the Chief Coxswain. Bill Roe was his name and as a member of the lower deck you may not have known him, if you did I would appreciate any information. I also am an ex Leading Seaman (1970 -1979)

Thanks Steve

Hello Steve,

Thank you for your kind words, AHOY is a joint effort with me friend and Web Master Terry Kearns in Atlanta, Georgia turning my research and writing into the site that is up on the Web for anyone who drops in,
hopefully to find something of interest.

When did your Father serve in both Australia, and Bataan?

I was in Australia as a Midshipman from September 1939/ March 1941, the ship left Colombo for Australia, I was promoted to Acting Sub- Lieutenant and returned to England for my Sub's Courses. After I had qualified as a Torpedo Anti-Submarine Specialist in UK Schools over 1947 and part of 1948, I came home, and was appointed to
Warramunga, as a Lieutenant as the Flotilla TASO, with Captain Harrington RAN as Captain D. We at one stage moved the Flotilla staff to Bataan, that would have in 1948.

Nice to hear from you, but I cannot say with certainty that I served in either ship with your Dad.

Best regards,
Mac. Gregory.
