Anthony Murray, a 'donkeyman' (stoker) in HMS Voltaire

Hello Mac,

I found your site while doing a bit of research about my granddad Anthony Murray, my dad passed the bar last year and it has taken me about eight months to go through all of his photographs properly.

Anyway I see that grandad is listed in the crew list supplied by Simon Templar as a 'donkeyman' I never came across that term during my 23 years in the Royal Navy, as you can see from the photo attached he is a Chief Stoker.

Also attached is a photograph which has written on the back 'dad in pow camp' I thought that somebody else might be interested in this picture.

I have the same pictures at a higher resolution if anybody is interested.

Yours aye.

Dave Murray

Dear David,

My thanks for the photo of your Grandad, and the Voltaire group one in POW camp.

We are building up a lot of information about that particular ship, and I am sure a lot of people out there will be interested.

I agree with you that Donkeyman is not a Naval term, but I think is used in the Merchant Navy, here is a definition:

Donkeyman: Rating who tends a donkey boiler, or engine, and assists in engine-room.

Again my thanks, we will add your message and photos to our Volitaire Page.

Best regards,

Mac.
