Alfred Rutledge served on the USS Blue

Hello,

My name is Rebecca Costello. My father Alfred Rutledge served on the USS Blue, a destroyer in the Pacific. He never spoke much about it but we would like any information you can give us. Please help us if you can.

Thank you so much.

Yours truly,
Rebecca Costello

Rebecca,

Thank you for your message, I have a lot to be thankful for due to USS Blue, when my Australian Cruiser was in a devasted way at the Battle of Savo Island in August of 1942, Blue came close to us, I was able to jump the distance between the ships to be saved by her and her crew. As were many others of my shipmates.

If you go to my Ahoy. Web site at URL: http://ahoy.th-jk.net and look at my story of the sinking of HMAS Canberra, there is a photo of me with some shipmates on the deck of USS Blue.

Your father was probably on board her at that time.

I will send you some details of the ship in another E-Mail.

Best wishes,
Mac. Gregory.

Dear Sir,

I can't begin to thank you enough for the information you have given me concerning my father. He
has been gone now since 1982. I never heard my father talk too much about his experiences except
that he never wanted to be buried at sea. He had two ships shot out from under him. I do not know
the name of the other although I wish I did. I do remember him talking of the USS Blue. This is
the one he spoke of if he talked at all. I am proud of my father's service to his country and I take
pride that he served. May God bless you also for your service, sir.

I cried as I read these accounts, but I am thrilled to finally know about them. My little nine year
old grandson loves history and I had told him about his grandfather. He wanted to know more and
I realized I did not know and we should so that it would never be forgotten. I have made copies of
this material and soon I will go back to my home to share it with my children and my mom. I want
to be sure that my father's service and your sir, will never be forgotten.

Thank you again.
Rebecca Costello

Rebecca,

I am delighted that I was able to help you about USS Blue in a small way.

It is wonderful how E-Mails and a specific subject may connect people across the world.

With best wishes to you, and your grandson for Christmas, may 2005 bring you and yours a happy and healthy year.

Mac.
